It’s highly likely you’ve heard of disability benefits before, they are funds provided by a public or private body to a person suffering from a disability or illness. The idea behind disability benefits is to redistribute the wealth to those who are inflicted by disabilities and cannot support themselves by other means. Without these benefits, individuals could become disabled or ill and have no way of supporting themselves, including you.

There are common illnesses and disorders that are used for disability benefit claims. It is important to be familiar with these conditions because if you ever incur them yourself you will understand that there are disability benefits available to you. Below is a list of six common conditions for disability benefit claims.

1. Back Pain

Arguably, the most common disability claim is related to back pain. Back pain can forgo your ability to maintain regular full-time employment, regardless of the physical nature of your back pain.

Back pain itself is not a condition, although, it is a strong indicator of another condition. More specifically, conditions related to extreme back pain are spinal disorders, such as stenosis and osteoarthritis, and spinal disk issues, such as a slipped disk, degenerative disc disease and facet arthritis.

2. Heart Conditions

There are a number of heart conditions that can impact your ability to work. Generally, heart conditions do not cause a lot of pain but can make you feel tired or unproductive because your body is not functioning properly due to the heart condition.

Common cardiovascular conditions in the disability claims world are coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, heart attacks or arrhythmias.

3. Psychiatric Conditions

Those that suffer from psychiatric conditions, otherwise known as mental conditions, may be unable to maintain a regular schedule, stay focused throughout a work day, follow directions or fail to collaborate successfully with fellow co-workers.

Typical psychiatric conditions that impact people’s ability to work include depression, anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or intellectual disabilities. To be more specific about intellectual disabilities, this refers to those with low IQs.

4. Cancer

There are too many types of cancers to list, but any type can seriously debilitate your ability to work on a full-time basis. This is especially true if you’re going through some form of cancer treatment because it takes a toll on your body and mental capacity. Cancer is taken very seriously by social security administration bodies.

5. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Numbness and tingling in your arms and hands are telltale signs of carpal tunnel syndrome, sometimes weakness could be an indicator too. Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by a pinched nerve in your arm or wrist usually resulting from repetitive hand motions.

Despite how many people are impacted by carpal tunnel syndrome, not everyone with the condition is part taking in a disability claim. But since the majority of jobs require the use of both hands, this explains why disability claims are common for this disorder.

6. Obesity

Being overweight or obese alone is not enough to obtain disability benefits, but if your obesity has an impact on your body thereby causing another condition that impacts your ability to work, claiming disability benefits is possible.

For example, being overweight or obese may worsen existing back pain or heart conditions. Also, obesity may impact your psychiatric condition by causing fatigue or inability to concentrate. By gaining access to disability benefits, people struggling with obesity can take the time to get down to a healthy weight thus eliminating the related conditions.
